Anderson Silva’s UFC Protest!
April 12th, 2010 · No Comments

After picking up my jaw off the floor from UFC 112 and the odd performance given by Anderson Silva I have to admit I was baffled. But then I reviewed the fight in context with his most recent bouts leads me to a possible conclusion. Now I am not saying that this is what is going on but it sure makes for some interesting thoughts.
Is Anderson Silva staging an active protest against the UFC?
The way I see it a UFC champion really doesn’t have many forms of protest available to them with the iron clad contracts they sign. Think about, one of the most beloved UFC Champions of all time, Randy Couture. He did his best to protest and leave the UFC. We all know how that ended. Essentially if you are an active UFC Champion your avenues for protest are limited…. unless you decide to protest the UFC inside the octagon with your performance. A staged protest could be one where an obviously dominant fighter could say dance and showboat for a full five rounds only striking when necessary.
Could “The Spider” actually be protesting during a fight? Lets review some interesting story lines:
June 2006 – March 2008 – Anderson Silva dominates all UFC opponents including Rich Franklin, Chris Leben, Nate Marquardt and Dan Henderson.
March 2008 – After his fight with Dan Henderson Anderson Silva expresses desire to have a boxing match with Roy Jones Jr. UFC President Dana White says he will not allow this to happen.
April 2008 – Anderson Silva publicly states he will retire from the UFC when his contract is up and then fight Roy Jones Jr. Reports are that contracts have been prepared and signed.
July 2008 – Anderson Silva moves up to 205lbs to fight James Irvin and knocks him down minutes into the first round essentially with an effortless single light punch followed by a few strikes to James Irvin while he is curled into the fetal position. Was this the first of many poor fights to come?
October 2008 – In his fight with Patrick Cote (a fight Anderson stated he was unhappy with) the Spider started the same odd behavior we saw in UFC 112. Showboating, dancing and taunting. In round three Cote stepped wrong and blew his knee out. If this had not happened would we have had our first five round snoozer?
April 2009 – Thales Leites goes a full five rounds with a seemingly uninterested Anderson Silva. More taunting and showboating was displayed.
August 2009 – Silva again moves up to 205lbs to fight Forrest Griffin. After the expected showboating and dancing he knocks out Griffin with, again, an effortless display of striking.
November 2009 – Silva’s scheduled to fight legitimate striker Vitor Belfort in January 2010 but postpones fight due to injury, fight is rescheduled for February 2010 but again is postponed due to a “slow recovery” from elbow surgery.
Fight is rescheduled for April 2010 but then Belfort has to pull out due to injury. Damien Maia is slated to fill the spot. Although Maia is excellent in Jiu Jitsu he is without a doubt over-matched in the striking. Reports are that Anderson is not pleased with the lack of a quality opponent.
April 2010 – UFC 112 – In what was described by many as “the strangest fight ever witnessed in the octagon” Anderson Silva showboats, dances and appears to actually be bored with his fight. It was simply put “embarrassing”.
Post fight Anderson Silva was asked about his feelings about the fight. He responded in his native tongue with Ed Soares, his manager, translating into english. The sentiment given by Soares was one full of apology and regret over a poor showing but when I looked at Silva’s face I didn’t see any of those emotions.
Lastly at the post fight press conference Silva was quoted as saying
“Sometimes fights don’t turn out the way people would like them to, but I don’t feel I owe anybody and apology right now. Sometimes fights turn out good; sometimes fights turn out bad.”
and
“I went in there to do a job. Sometimes fans aren’t always happy with the way you fight… The way I feel, my mission was completed. I came in and dominated the fight and did what I had to do.”
Does that sound like an apologetic Anderson Silva? I think not.
So what do you think? Was this a protest by a top level fighter who is just upset he didn’t get his way?
